Oxidative Stress, Antioxidant Micronutrient Status, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk among Hepatitis B Virus Seropositive Subjects in Ogbomoso, Nigeria

Abstract
Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been linked to oxidative stress, depletion of antioxi-dant micronutrients, and increased cardiovascular disease risk through dyslipidemia. Chronic HBV alters renal function indices. This study investigated the relationship of oxidative stress, renal function, and cardiovascular disease risk among Hepatitis B seropositive individuals in Ogbomoso, Nigeria.
Methods: This is an exploratory study involving 51 HBV-seropositive subjects, comprising 26 males and 25 females. The subjects were categorized into acute and chronic states using Abbott serological kits. Seventeen (17) participants presented with acute infection, while thirty-four (34) had chronic infection. Anthropometric indices were measured, and biochemical parameters were estimated using standard procedures. The generated data were analyzed statistically, with p<0.05 set as the level of significance.
Results: Plasma levels of TC (3.61mmol/L), LDL (1.78mmol/L), and apoB100 (0.68mmol/L) were higher in the HBV chronically infected participants (p>0.05) compared to the acute phase: TC (3.32 mmol/L), LDL (1.57 mmol/L), and 100 (0.61mmol/L).
Individuals in acute phase showed increased plasma levels of TG (1.88mmol/L), MDA (1.06μmol/L), Urea (9.90 mmol/L), creatinine (87.0 μmol/L), Vit. C (0.74μg/mL), Vit. E (11.8mg/dL) (p<0.05) than the chronic phase. Plasma concentration of ApoB100 was higher in males, while vitamin C was increased in females. There were significant positive correlations between systolic blood pressure and triglycerides, and between total cho-lesterol and LDL-C, APOB100, and BMI in the chronic phase.
Conclusion: Mild hypercholesterolemia was present in HBV subjects with chronic infection compared with acute infections. Differences in oxidative stress markers, antioxidant vitamins, and altered renal function were not strongly pronounced among the study participants.
